Moving Column Gantry 5 Axis CNC Machining Center

The GMD 68 Series is a much larger sibling of the GMD 35, featuring a moving-column, double-column gantry design. Its worktable is up to 5.8 meters wide, with X-axis travel stretching to 20.5 meters, and a clear gantry width of 6.8 meters. For massive parts that are nearly 6 meters wide and too heavy to flip over, this machine is the absolute workhorse for the job.

Product Introduction

Product Details

Put simply, the GMD 68 takes the GMD 35 capabilities to the absolute max. It offers a spindle nose-to-table distance of 500-2000mm, paired with a 1500mm Z-axis travel, allowing you to reach very deep cavities. The standard 30kW direct-drive plus BF gearbox delivers massive low-end torque, making roughing on heavy castings swift, while keeping finishing passes smooth. For heavy energy equipment and extra-large molds, it's not just about whether it can be done, but whether it can be done in less time.

Product Features

Truly massive:

A 6.8-meter clear gantry width is its killer feature. Wide parts that don't fit into other machines can be laid down horizontally here without frequently shifting the workpiece to find the center.

Heavy-load transmission:

Under extreme load, the X-axis uses a Module 5 high-precision rack with dual-motor backlash elimination, while the Y/Z axes use large 8020 and 6320 ball screws. The movement is rock-solid, avoiding missed steps or backlash over long travels.

Fully enclosed ram:

The Z-axis box ram comes with its own protection, preventing chips and coolant from entering. This not only protects the guideways but also ensures rigidity during deep cavity machining, keeping tool vibration to a minimum.

Stable structural support:

The core bed and columns undergo rib reinforcement and secondary stress-relief aging. Even under brutal heavy cutting, this large machine won't easily lose its accuracy.

GMD 68 VS GMD 35 Series

These are close cousins, but the build and the jobs they handle are completely different.

Width Comparison: The 35 Series has a 2.5m table and a 3.5m gantry. The 68 Series doubles the table width to 5.8m and pushes the gantry to 6.8m. The part widths they can clamp are in a completely different league.

Accuracy Comparison: Because the spans are much larger, the full-travel positioning accuracy on the X and Y axes of the 68 Series is slightly looser than the 35 Series (68 is 0.058~0.073 for X, 35 is 0.045~0.07). This is governed by physics, but it's more than sufficient for actual large-part machining.

Application: The 35 Series leans towards "medium-heavy" and long parts. The 68 Series is pure and simple, built for "ultra-wide, ultra-heavy" monsters.

Product Advantages

Although called a moving-column machine, the bones of this machine have extreme potential for multi-axis expansion. We often tell customers that if you plan to add a tilt head attachment later, the bed and structure of this moving column gantry 5 axis cnc machining center can definitely handle it. Because the workpiece stays still while the moving column slides on stable guideways, it lays a perfect physical foundation for future upgrades to 5-axis simultaneous machining. During wide-span cutting, its double-column structure provides high symmetrical rigidity, allowing this moving column gantry 5 axis cnc machining center to maintain excellent surface finish and minimal tool marks while achieving extremely high metal removal rates. This is why many military and energy factories specifically request this moving column gantry 5 axis cnc machining center when planning heavy-duty workshops-it's not just a machine; it's a heavy-duty fortress in your shop.

Product Application

Mainly active in machining super-large wind turbine hubs, large marine diesel engine frames, oversized injection molding machine platens, and structural parts for heavy mining machinery. These parts are usually wide, bulky, and require multiple faces to be milled, drilled, and bored in one single setup, absolutely avoiding repeated lifting and alignment.

Customization Options

Spindle Upgrades: For mold finishing, we can equip an HSK high-speed spindle. For tough materials, you can upgrade to a higher-torque ZF gearbox.

Attachment Heads: Options for right-angle heads, universal heads, and automatic head-changing magazines, achieving 5-face machining in one setup.

Control Systems: Siemens, Fanuc, Mitsubishi, or Syntec-whichever your operators prefer.

Linear Scale Closed-Loop: Because of the huge spans, we strongly recommend opting for full closed-loop linear scales to effectively eliminate thermal deformation impacts on long-travel accuracy.

FAQ Module

Q: The machine is so big, can it even get into my workshop?

A: We ship it disassembled. The bed, columns, and crossbeam are transported separately. Our engineers will guide the lifting and assembly on-site. As long as your workshop door width allows, it can usually be set up smoothly.

Q: Will the 20-meter X-axis have thermal growth issues from long ball screws?

A: No. The long X-axis uses a rack and pinion, so there is no long screw thermal deformation. The Y/Z axes use short screws, and with our pre-set compensation parameters, the stability is excellent.

Q: Can this machine do 5-axis machining directly?

A: It ships standard as a 3-axis machine. However, we have reserved the interface for 5-axis capabilities. You can choose a 5-axis tilt head attachment and pair it with the right control system to achieve 5-axis simultaneous machining.

Acceptance & After-Sales

Before delivery, laser interferometry is a must; we compensate for errors across the full 20-meter X-axis travel. We provide a one-year full-machine warranty, free delivery, on-site installation, commissioning, and operator training. If major machine components encounter issues, we guarantee our engineers will be on-site within 72 hours. Furthermore, we keep a constant stock of easily worn parts like racks and roller guideways in our warehouse, ensuring your heavy-duty production line never has to stop.
